The brackets Dodge should have provided
I don’t have any idea how many of you have this same problem. However, since I’m pretty much a normal driver, on normal dippy streets, in normal parking lots, and with a less than careful wife who also drives the car, I would assume some of you do. The problem is with the front bumper of my Magnum SRT8 being a little too low sometimes.
The plastic front end has been caught on things a couple times. The plastic on the belly pan that is supposed to hold the mounting screw clips has been ripped to where the clips no longer do their job of holding on to the bumper well. Of course, all of the plastic also had gotten stretched some from the experiences. The result was sagging in the middle of the plastic mass that further reduced ground clearance. Today I decided to do something about it.
After I took off the belly pan I could easily see why there was a problem. Dodge, in their greater wisdom, had not provided any support for the plastic mass, beyond the 2 bolts that secure the under engine cover. They are at least 3 ft back from the front of the car. I laid there in the Texas heat for quite a while before my mind hit on a solution. If I added some brackets to hold up the back edge of the bumper, everything would be solid and straight.
So… I implemented my idea and have some non-professional pictures and some amateur commentary of a DYI solution that worked well. I now have a solid back bumper edge and 5 1/2 inches of center clearance.
The documentation seems to be too large to attach to this posting, so, if you want it or need it, you'll have to send me an email (fmarshal3@aol.com). If you choose to use it... I’m really glad I could help…
