I have a 72 Dart Swinger with a 318 hooked to a 727 and in the rear end I have a detroit locker with 4.88 gears. Im planning on making it into a car that would allow me to drive 600 miles to school. Im going to replace the gears with some taller ones and Im thinking about putting fuel injection on it. When it comes to the tranny Im not sure what I want to do to make it more high way worthy. I was looking at 4 5 and 6 speeds but with a 5 and 6 speeds I am having trouble finding adapters that will work. I was just wondering if anybody had idea for what would be best, right now not really sure what my budget is but it has to be somewhat reasonable.

Thanks
Dan

Why not put a 3 speed overdive behind it .You can even find one with an aluminum case behind the slant 6 .

You didn't say what rear axle you have. If it's the 8 3/4 there are 2.70 something gears. The 81/4 have at least a 2.93 and there might be a 2.45, there is in the 7 1/4. Start there and see what milage you caan get before switching transmissions. If you can find it there is an aluminum cased 3sp/od trans based on the Mopar 4sp. After that Keisler (?) makes some kits for Mopars using Tremec 5spds but they are pricey. At 600 miles to school I think I would take a bus or go by train rather than have the worry and expense of keeping a car on campus. Many locals (townies) think of the big campus student parking lots as pick-a-part for free salvage yards.
