wiring the ignition
Hello everyone
i am in the middle of rebuilding a 70 duster, and since the original wiring was a fire hazard, its being replaced by a painless universal mopar 14 circuit kit. Everything is going along great except it is not time to wire the ignition, and i cant figure out what wires go where. the painless book provides little help, saying mopar sometimes change their wiring colors, i need to figure out which wires on the steering column correspond to the following catagories:
Ignition start
Ignition coil
Accessory fuse panel
Ignition switch fuse panel
Battery B+

Heres a picture of the connection with the wires i have, i have tried looking in a Haynes manual, but the wiring diagrams are of no help, since all the wires are coded, they dont say what they do, can anyone help?? -thanks in advance.

I went to (painlessperformance.com) I scrolled down the left column to (instruction manuals), when the page came up, I found the link for mopar muscle car wiring harness, about halfway down the page was some info for the ignition switch. The wiring colors matched the color of the wires you were holding in the picture.
I wanted to add, I was looking again at the orange wire you had between your fingers. The only wiring diagram I could find was for a 70 dodge. The orange wire went from the ignition switch to the starter relay. I don't know if dodge and plymouth used the same wiring colors? If there is continuity between the orange wire and B+ terminal at the switch, with the key in the crank position only, but no continuity with the key in the run position, then it looks like the orange wire goes to the starter relay. There shouldn't be any voltage to the switch if you do an ohms test.
ignition start old wire is y, new wire is pur.
coil, I guess with key in the run position, old wire is brn, new wire is pink.
acc fuse panel, old wire is black, new wire is brn.
switched ignition voltage to fuse panel, old wire is blue, new wire is org.
B+,both old and new wires are red. This info came from the painless wiring site. I guess your old wiring colors don't match any of this?

thank you for such a quick response, i was in a rush and forgot to mention my main problem, im not concerned with the 2 top reds, or the orange, all the other colors match up with the painless instructions, BUT the yellow wire is a thinner diameter than the others, and its not supposed to be i dont think, does it matter the gauge of the wire for the "ignition start"?
