Electrical Gremlin
Hi all
this might be long, but I try and be very detailed when leaving
a message.
I have a 74 Dart, with 318\auto\ps\pb\air
This car has been in the family for about 15 or so years, and was
driven by my niece in high school, in tucson.
A problem started back then that the car would not start when
in the "park" posistion.
ok, so put it in neutral and it started...
I drove it home, around 14mpg
then after it being back here for a year or so, the car would not
start at all. would not even turn over. I could get no info on this,
but thanks to the net, I found out it was the seat belt interlock
just had to by pass it, car started up fine..
So now to the new problem...
the car runs on and intermintent bases.
the car will start, run, then it will not restart.
it will turn over very easy, but will not run, and when I turn the
key back, it back fires thru the carb.
I see a pair of red wires coming from the steering wheel
but although they seem to have something to do with the gages
I have had the car running without the wires connected, with the
wires connected, etc>..2 red, mathed to a brown and a black
wire out of the harness connection.
is there a fuseable link some place or????
If no help here, does anyone know of a "great" dodge
mechanic in the Torrance area thats good at electrical...
or can you suggest how to bye pass the key and use a starter
button.
Thanks

Are you refering to the "ballast resistor" ?
I checked, 10.5v at the + of coil, but at the coil, it only shows
about 5v...
seems like I am loosing voltage someplace...
not the control modual...just changed it out, it was new any way
all seems good there.. My next line of attack is to
disconnect the + lead, and run a wire from the ballast resistor
to the +, then try to start the car, if it starts, then I know were
to look,
Best

Hi, well that name is cool, but the Ballast resistor is not my problem.
As stated before,
yesterday "Fri" I did a bye pass of the hot lead to the coil
and got my 11.5 v. book calls for no more the 1 volt difference from
Battery. Car still would not run.
So Today is finding my remote starter, and seeing if I get
spark at the plug...yes I know, should have done that
already.. I did do a voltage check across the coil, and did not
get any voltage on the negative side of coil...I think there should
be the same voltage as the positive side...
Like I tell the guys at my VFW post, sometimes when its
your own car, its harder to work on then someone elses car
Well cross my fingers and hope the problem or the fix shows
itself today...
thanks for the help
