Default Headlight lens care

What is the best product available to clean plastic headlight lenses safely to maintain optical clarity? I am assuming glass cleaning products contain chemical ingredients which could damage lenses.

Without sounding sarcastic, plain old water with a drop or two of dawn dish soap to remove the road grease/oil....rinse well.......don't use the solution to wash your car, it will remove the wax.

I used a polishing compound and a low-speed buffer, with fine grti sandpaper...cleared my lenses right up, after about 3 hours of buffing. Permatex makes a kit that is supposed to only take about half an hour, it is available at auto-parts stores, but I haven't used it yet.
