Default Cummins or gasser?

I'm sure it has been beat to death, but it's about that time for me. I want some opinions on if I should get one or not. I can either sink money into my truck, which has 170,000 miles, and I don't think I will ever see 18mpg out of it. I can get a 5.3 GM, or get a 5.9 Cummins. The only real problem I have is that I very rarely pull anything anymore, but that might change when I get another bass boat. I don't know if I can justify the upkeep on a diesel or not. I wanna say that the 5.3 is the logical answer, but then again, I fight it with the longevity of a diesel, and plus playing around with a diesel is more fun anyways. So help me out guys, and please be as specific as possible in your opinions.

I would go with a Cummins for sure! The longevity of the engine is awesome and nothing rides better, low end torque management. Some have put several hundred thousand miles and their Cummins still going strong!
