Default Timing Belt - '99 Avenger ES 2.5L at 78K miles

Hello, I was recently advised to replace my timing belt since I'm at 78K miles and the "Dodge" recommendation is to replace at 60K. As you know the engine is a Mitsubishi. Anyway, I'd appreciate any opinions as to whether this is truly necessary - naturally, it's better to replace a part before it breaks down but it's expensive and my car drives great! Thanks for any advice.

If the timing belt breaks on a Mitsubishi 2.5, the engine will be toast. They absolutely grenade themselves. It's ugly...

Default 1999 Avenger ES timing belt replacement (owner's manual)

I appreciate the reply. I found my owner's manual and it says if you live in CA, Mass. or CT then replacing it at 60K is recommended but any other state it's 100K! What?? I don't understand this and how there could be such a huge difference in mileage? Seems bogus to me. I only drive about 3K per year on ave.

The choice is yours. If there is an inspection cover, take it off and have a look at the belt. If it is cracking or anything replace it. Otherwise drive on and hope for the best.
