Default Looking to buy

Hey guys,

This looks like an awesome forum with a a lot of well versed people on the Caliber. I'm looking to purchase my first car and really looking at getting a Caliber (most likely used 07) and just wondered how the stock stereo is and if there is anything else I should be looking out for and if there has been any problems with the CVT transmission. From looking at the online reviews some people say that the CVT takes some getting used to and if I should be looking at the standard automatic trans.

I will be thankful for any opinions you guys have and thanks in advance.

Hi Stuie welcome to the forum.
If your looking to buy a Caliber be it used or new it's no different than
any other car when making those main chioce regarding options.
You can get 1.8,2.0 or 2.4 liter engines,5 speed or CVT (there is no
other automatic trans option).
Do you live in an area where climate dictates that AWD would be a distinct
advantage? Then your only option is RT model with 2.4L and CVT and
it's not an off road vehicle (like a trail rated Jeep).RT is availiable in 5 spd FWD only.
The best MPG are turned in by the 1.8L 5 spd (only 5 spd is avialiable).
The 2.0L only comes with CVT and when driven judicously will give great mpg.
There are a lot of daily rental Calibers becoming availiable from
Enterprise Car Rentals returns and as always buying used has to be a cautious
procedure, make sure whatever model you have decided on has all the
latest Technical Service Bulletins followed that apply as they affect drivability
and CVT performance plus mpg.
Good luck and happy hunting for you Caliber.

If you can, opt for the 6CD with the full speaker system. It is fantastic if you like music and have a long drive to work. I haven't got that many miles on my Caliber yet but the CVT really doesn't take getting used to unless you really are concerned about gas mileage. It's drives like any other automatic transmission but a little better. There is no jerkiness just smooth all the way.

From looking at the online reviews some people say that the CVT takes some getting used to and if I should be looking at the standard automatic trans.

You'll get better gas mileage with the CVT after breakin.

I will be thankful for any opinions you guys have and thanks in advance.

Our CVT has preformed well now for 20k miles. I wouldn't be afraid of one.

One thing you may want to do if your buying a used Caliber is to check the
number of hours the engine has run (total runtime) and divide the total shown
milage by total hours, this will give you the average speed car has run at since build.
I guess you could call this being a bit **** but some people like to know this
type of info.
This was posted by another owner on another forum.
To find total engine runtime hours:
1.-Turn key to RUN position but do not start.
2.-With odometer showing TOTAL milage press and hold
the odometer cycle button for about 4-8 seconds and wait.
In the odometer window will appear HRS XXXX.
