2.0 CVT Spark plugs-opinions and facts
Hi all. I've got the 07 cvt 2.0 23,000 miles. I have no problems as of yet, but looking to the future I have to ask about plugs. I had a 96 Stratus which I put Bosch Platinum 4 plugs in. Now, it was nice not having to gap those, and I didn't really have a problem with those plugs, but I was told way back when that the cylinder compression was not favorable when using those particular plugs.
So, with that said, what have the rest of you been using? OEM or aftermarket? Pros and cons?

Replaced Spark Plugs with Autolite XP Iridium. They seem to be doing ok. I have recorded 27,26,and 28 MPG's thus far with them in. That is mix driving and "Hypermiling" as well. I also have a 2007 2.0with CVT it is a SXT.
Installed APP 5224 Autolite Double Platinums @ 10,000 mi. I thought Caliber was running good w/old plugs, but new plugs made a world of difference. I gapped them @.048 and the car fires instantly as it first starts to turn over. The original plugs did show signs of wear and rounding of the center electrode.Wide open throttle power did not improve but @ 25-45 mph the engine responds to even the slightest increase in throttle. I have not done a mileage check but it is my experience in many years of driving that a car that is in this state of tune is maximizing fuel economy.
Ata steady 35 mph on level road the tach seems to be reading about 100 rpm less. Maybe the CVT is able to cut the revs based on the lesser amount of throttle opening. Any time the amount ofthrottle opening required to maintain a given speed is reduced, fuel economy increases. With a conventional auto trans it can be felt as the trans upshifts sooner.OEM plugs will probably give the same results with the increased gap size, but optimum performance would not last as long.
The plugs were very easy to change on the Caliber. Almost as easy as on a Briggs & Stratton flathead type air cooled engine. I paid $15.16 for four spark plugs @ Walmart. I have used Autolites in other cars and have been pleased with them. I tried Bosch +2's in a 1997 2.0 Merc Tracer and the car idled horribly. With Autolite APP 5144's and a custom made K&N cone air filter system"Tracy" has gotten the drop on many so called rice rockets, SUV,s and pickup trucks. There is no geater satisfaction to be had than dusting off a Jap car equipped w/20" wheels and a fart pipe exhaust. I love to say to those drivers after an impromptu stop light Grand Prix "Your car looks faster than mine".
Gas Mileage update: Last 6000 mi.=25.5 mpg

I use the Bosh Platiums in my 2007 2.0 cvt 75,000 miles on it . I replace plugs every 25000 miles / air cleaner
pvc valve . You will see a diference in starting of from a dead stop. I have had no ploblems with this car.
With oil changes every 5000 miles. Everyday driving 29-31 mpg i take a milage check every time i fill up.
And if you have Dunlaps tires ,get new ones you will hear the diference in the noise.

I decided to check my plugs here recently and found them to be NGK V-groove brand. All were normal wear. I got mine used at 16000 miles. It was a program or fleet car. So, naturally I figured that the car had been ridden long and hard with a minimum of service maybe. You know how they use those cars and then trade or sell them before a year is up. Anyway, where did you find a pcv valve? The Advance, AutoZone, ect...stores in Dothan, AL seem not to carry those yet. Or did you get it from the dealer?
Pvc Valve is a dealer item at around 9 dollars . Its located front left side to manifold there are 2 different types for
the 2.0 engine. So take yours with you , that will help you.
