CVT Transmission belt life?
Well, its not a belt, but 492 steel links inside the transmission formed into a 'belt'. And it pushes instead of pulls like traditional belts. It will last the life of the transmission if the transmission is taken care of. Chrysler recommends 45000 miles fluid change intervals. The blet wouldn't be able to be replaced in the field by anyone unless they were working in a sterile environment. The 'belt' rides inbetween two super high polished steel pulleys. Any contaminents whatsoever get on those pulleys and the belt slips a fraction of an inch the pulleys and the belt will be destroyed. So if the wrong fluid was ever put into that transmission or a bunch of dirt got into the unit.....need I say more? It should be a really good unit, its a transmisison built by JATCO (Japanese Automatic Transission Company) and has been used in Nissans for a couple years now. They had initital problems and Chrysler got the updated units.
Its very interesting, you should see the inside of the transmission. Very serious engineering in there. In fact, service parts are not available for the unit. Aparently the Japanese don't want us reverse engineering the unit. If one fails we are to replace it without disassembling it.
Brandon, thanks for the info, I signed the papers on a SXT Sport, Inferno Red today and I love it! The dealership told me the same thing that it was good for life. I'm taking mine back Tuesday for tint, bug deflector and floor mats and while they have it they are loaning me a Charger w/Hemi. I can already smell the burnt rubber.
