01 GR Caravan Electrical Freak Show
OK, I've got a good one here.
My van began having trouble starting the other morning on the way in to work. When I'd turn the key, it would just click like the batt was low. Being the stubborn male that I am, I kept trying it and the starter began turning and turning and it wouldn't start. I turned the key off, back on and click, click, then starter turns the engine over and no start. Once more and it fired right up, just like it normally would before this began. At lunch time, I went to start it and the same trouble all over again, so I get under the hood and find some corrosion on the batt terminals. I clean them and the posts real good, reconnect everything and the exact same problem happens. This time after I get it started and it's idling, all of the idiot lights turn on like I'd just turned the key on and then all the guages go dead. The engine is still running just fine. Since that day, I've had this issue with the idiot lights and guages happen a couple more times but not consistantly. The only consistant problem is the starting issue. Now today, the engine was turning over and not firing again. I turned off the key and the starter was still turning the engine over. ????? I turned the key back on and it fired up and the starter wouldn't quit even though the key was in the on position and not the start position. That repeated a couple times and now I wonder if I have an ignition switch problem.
I'm completely baffled with this one since I can't find anything wrong and it's acting like it's possessed by satan himself. I did notice that the battery is bulging at the sides so I'm going to check that and see if I need to replace it. Also, there was a fair amount of batt liquid that had ran out the top and might have gotten on wire bundle underneath. Could that be causing my problems? I always experienced a car that wouldn'tturn overif the batt needed replacing.
Friday 10-5-07 UPDATE
Checked out the battery and charging system and everything's AOK.
Next, I'll be going through all the wiring.
Still, I remember someone telling me when I was a kid, that if you pour battery acid on the wire harness or the battery cables (I can't remember exactly now) the car won't start. If only I could remember what the remedy might be! Maybe I'll just try washing off the engine compartment and see if that does it.
