Default 2002 g. caravan battery/electrical problem

Recently I was installing a new battery due to extrmemly cold temperatures. Due to the cold I was rushing and accidentally installed the posts backwards (positive on negative and vice cersa). Immediately the electrical system went haywire (wipers came on, horn went off continually and some smoke appeared near the bottom of the engine. Some people I have talked to say that I probably burnt out a few fuses, specifically one main fuse in the fuse box and another located somewhere in the engine compartment. Can anyone offer any insight into what exactly I have done and what I need to do to repair this problem? Thanks!
