91 Caravan Transmission

I am at a loss as to what is going on. A couple of years ago, my '91 Caravan started having problems in the winter. When it's cold, I can shift into D or R and sit there. Nothing happens. Once the vehicle is warm it seems to work fine, with this exception: It sometimes is warm enough to drive, but will not shift between gears (eg. 3rd to 4th). When this happens, I need to shift into neutral, turn the ignition off, restart, and then shift back into drive (magically it is now in the correct gear!). I've had the fluid changed, but it made no difference whatsoever. It works fine in the summer, so I question whether the problem is the transmission itself. Please Help Me!!!!!

OK here is what you need to do . your transmission is need of service there is a series what looks like bolts sticking out of the side of the tranny each one is the pressure relief valves for a specific gear also take the car in to shop and have them clean out the valve body there is restriction within the brain of the transmission itself and that would explain why your trans is experiencing periods of not going into gear . The same is true for the auto overdrive model as well . These transmissions are extremely sensitive and that they MUST be serviced regularly when the trans is serviced though be ABSOLUTELY certain that only a type 7176 or atf +3 is being used the reason for this is you will allmost certainly cause trans death if you use anything else and these trans are NOT cheap about 1800 for a rebuilt model . Hope this helps Caravansasleepr
Thanks alot Caravansasleeper!!

I will be calling my mechanic today. I was hoping that I didn't need a rebuild.

I saw your posts about tricking out your caravan. Good luck with that. I just want to keep mine running for a few more years. But I am planning on trying my hand at painting this year. The hood and roof have peeled. I'm thinking....flames!

Again, thank you very much!
