Default How do I add Factory Keyless entry to 96 Caravan

I have installed a factory keyless entry receiver on the Van.

Installing it was no problem as the wiring was already there, I just had to plug it in.

But it does not work. What did I miss?

By the way, I believe it does not work because when I ground out the grey/black wire (which is described as the "Remote Keyless Entry Program Signal") and place the key in the On position the door locks do not cycle.

Almost any tips are welcome -
1) I do not have a wire (dark green or otherwise) on the diagnostic connector, at pin one, so that tip will not work.
2) I have not located the program line (a dark green wire with a molded insulator (usually red) on the end). Located behind and at lower end of the glove box.

Thanks,
Drew

Default RE: How do I add Factory Keyless entry to 96 Caravan

Update:

I do not know why, but suddenly the remote works!

I think it is because I disconnected the battery, to work on something else.

When I programmed the remote the door locks did not cycle or anything, but it seems that whether I knew it or not (not in this case) I did program the remote.

Now there is only one thing left:
Pressing Unlock once does not do anything, but pressing Unlock twice unlocks all the doors.
There is a wire that carries the PKE signal to the Drivers door which is only connected if an RKE is installed. I am going to hunt down that wire and I hope that will complete this task.

For anyone else looking to do this the Receiver is easy to get at and cheep. (I paid $6.00 for mine in a junk yard.)
If you want to add RKE to yours try these steps:
Tools: Stubby Phillips, Small Pry bar/Medium to Large straight-slot screwdriver, long piece of wire.
1) Find a caravan in the junkyard that does not have keyholes on the sliding door(s).
2) Pull off the plastic that covers the columns alongside the windshield.
3) GENTLY pry up the front of the top of the dash. (Remember that if your breaks taking it out you might want this one!)
4) Unplug the connector to the lights on this piece of the dash.
5) Pull towards you, might wiggle it back and forth a little on the way, and remove the top of the dash.
6) There should be a small black box attached with two screws on the dash, in front of the driver.
7) Remove the screws, place in pocket.
8) Unplug wire connector.
9) Obtain a matching remote, with good batteries.
10) Return to your van.
11) Disconnect negative battery cable.
12) Repeat steps 1-5 on your van.
13) Unplug Connector protector from wire connector, and if still attached to dash remove it.
14) Plug in RKE receiver.
15) Attach Negative cable back on battery.
16) Attach a piece of wire from any ground point to the back of the RKE receiver's Wire connector, connecting the Grey/Black wire to ground.
17) Turn the ignition key to the On position. (Your horn is supposed to sound at this point and your door locks are supposed to cycle. Mine did neither.)
18) Press and hold the Unlock button for four seconds.
19) Turn off van.
20) Remove your ground wire.
21) With keys out of the ignition get out close all doors and press the lock button.
22) The horn should sound, and the doors should lock.
23) Test the Unlock button.
24) Play for a minute, reveling in your success.
25) Get back to work.
26) Retrieve screws from pocket and mount receiver to van.
27) Reverse steps 1-5.

At this point, if your van is like mine, everything works except the single press of the Unlock button. (Oh! And possibly the panic button. It was too late to try it when I realized the remote was working, last night.)

Stay tuned as I try to trace out the change I need to make to the Driver's door lock to get the single press to work.
