2000 Caravan 3.0 L - timing marks align but engine doesn't spin smoothly

I have a 2000 grand caravan and my wife was driving down the road when it suddenly quit. The timing belt broke and she tried starting it. Do you know if she did any damage to the valves by trying to start it with a broken timing belt?
