98 Caravan sport transmission issue
Have a dodge caravan with 200,000 on the clock, bought it a year ago and have had no prior issues with it at all, have put only about 25,000kms on it ourself and have not yet had a full service, so no fluid change on the transmission. Was barely driven over the winter period and now we have started on a road trip, we put on about 1500km's with no issue, until the other day whilst freeway driving it acts as if it has slipped into neutral and free revs. There was no grinding noise or warning signs at all. The fluid looks fine and is not blackened and there were no noises when it happened, and the car was not overheating at all.
Parked the car and came back to it a few days later and at low speeds seems to be ok, say nothing over maybe 30kph anything over it free revs but will occasionally reengage for a second or two here and there. Reverse seems to be working fine. Have tried shifting through the gears manually with no difference. And the fluid level is pretty well spot on.
Is it the dreaded transmission change/rebuild or could it be any host of lesser issues? Any other details needed just ask.
Thanks in advance.

This link might give some insight.

A complete failure could be the torque convertor shearing the blades internally. If this is the case a new TC or complete transmission rebuild is the only option.
The pump could have given up but I'd think that would be a slower death, but with a computer controlled transmission, who knows.
