Sorry, its a 96!!!

So i bought a vehicle from my friend, who said that the van died one day after he was riding around on a broken water pump. That's correct, he was riding around with a broken water pump. Anyways, i knew it can be an easy fix (or so i though) if it was an interference engine or not. Looked it up online, and found out it is NOT an interference. LUCKY ME!!! So i knew i had to change the water pump and belt, and set the timing. So great, i've done that. But there is no compression. I"m thinking to myself, are the valves bent? but i thought the valves can only bend if its an interference engine. Anyhow, since it was suppose to be a non interference engine, i decided to mess with the cams to see if i can get compression. The rear (closest to the firewall) cam is in the middle of a stable stroke when the timing is set. The front cam is at a stable position so i don't have to be really careful with it.

Now here's the thing, i line up all the timing marks, i might have been off one tooth, but NO COMPRESSION AT ALL! So i adjusted the cams so that they are NOT at the mark while the crankshaft is still at TDC (mark matching the oil pump). I move the rear cam where it is in the middle of the stable position to a stable position (all are moving clockwise). I get compression (or what ever there is)!!! so i move the rear one again to a 2nd stable position, i think i heard a misfire?!?!?! moved it one more time to the 3rd stable position, worse, so i move it back to the 2nd stable position. I now move the front one from its 1st stable position (original position) to a 2nd stable position. I get it to start!!!! woot!!!!!!! so stupidly, or not stupidly, put everything back together hoping the van will run even if its rough...and well..it runs MORE rough than i would hope for. the van idles very rough, and will stall once into gear, it will drive up to around 20 mph, but without giving it gas, it'll die. So i know that its really bad timing and mis-firing. I went to the mechanic and asked how much a timing job was, he knows i flip cars and he asked "didn't you just put a new one in?" i said yes, but i can't get the timing right, so i told him what was happening, no compression when the marks are correct. He asked me if i was sure it was non-interference. And i said yes. He loked at me and said it should be interference, he said left worked for chrysler until 93, and they were all interference. Looked it up in his book, and told me that the 3.0 is an interference engine. I even read the clause. But i could have sworn that is not the case. I've searched and searched and everyone says that it is a non-interference.

So the ultimate question is, is this engine a non interference or inteference engine. If it is a non interference, why did the engine not have compression when i set the timing correctly? and if the valves ARE bent, why is it possible to start the van when i take the cam's out of timing? and only when i put the timing off it gets compression. I get abosultely NO compression when the timing is correct.

Is the only other way to check if my valves are bent by pulling the valve covers? and even so, what valves are suppose to be open or closed, or halfway open and halfway closed? and how am i suppose to get the timing correct on the valves without using the camshaft marking? I've searched and searched and its not helping. I am utterly confused and i am sure that you guys might be too. I just need help!!!

Thanks in advance

The marks MUST be right on the notch

By the way this is an intererence engine..........if the belt breaks with piston at TDC a fully open valve WILL hit the piston

gah!!!! cause i search online and some are saying that they have ran the timing belt till it breaks and then just replaced it. No big deal, its a non interference. Oh man. then why do so many people say its a non interference engine on here????

This is an interference engine.

Mitchell on demand and alldata both says its an interference engine.

But....lets suppose the belt breaks at a point that the valves are closed or on their way to be closed....like half way there.....it wont touch......the cams will stop turning but the crank will continue....

It will touch a FULLY OPEN VALVE with piston at TDC

Alldata pic included

thanks a bunch. So just for future reference and making sure i get this right. a non-inteference engine is capable of bending a valve or no? I just want to know before i buy a car with a bad timing belt.

A non interference engine WONT touch at any time.....impossible to bend a valve
