Default 96 3 spd tranny problems

I was on a trip yesterday and evrything was fine until..
I stopped ata a light and when it turned green it was like the van slipped out of gear.
I shifted to first and was able to get off the road and eventually finish the trip by manually shifting from 1 to 2 to 3, I still have reverse.

By the time I got home it would barely move 1st either.

Once going it seems fine, 200 plus miles in drive.

The fluid level was very high immediately after the initial failure and the dip stick was very hot.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

my thought is your trans has gone to tranny heaven. If you were close by, I'd be able to sell you a good used trans for a very reasonable price.
