I know why, there's a couple sensors that are not the same plug in so they make it year specific. the 2000 engine and 1998 engine are exactly the same execpt for a couple minor changes you need to do. the blocks, heads, intake, exhaust are all exactly the same. just do it, it will work. if it doesn't I'll buy the van from you!

Who over told you that is a total clueless idiot. I take them out the top. but if you have a cherry picker, you can also take it out the bottom, but you also have to pull the tran too.,
It's quite easy to pull out the top but you have to remove all the accessories like PS, Alt, A/C, water pump, and crank pulley. then you have plenty of room to pull the engine out. I'll bet the person that 'told' you that doesn't realize that the 10min it takes to pull the wiper module makes it very easy to pull the engine. I don't even remove the hood or the radiator, just the radiator support, fans and upper intake just to make for a lot more room. And that odd guy on here is dead on, the engine will fit. There are some very minor changes along the way but if you pay attention to what you are doing, it's drop in fit.
