i have an 02 caravan, that i blew the motor in this morning. i also have access to a 97 caravan with a bad trans. i have searched and really didnt get a solid yes or no to my questions.

1. can i take the 3.3 out of the 97 and put it in the 02?
or
2. can i take the trans out of the 02 and put it in the 97?

both are 3.3l and have the overdrive trans.

3. what digit in the vin is the engine code?

No you can't use the engine because there are tooooo many differences such as the location of the water pump, intake manifold and a lot more. However you can use the 02 trans in the 97 but you'll need to change the flex plate or torque converter and you'll need to change the PRNDL wire connector. Both changes are very easy and cheap (free)www.car-part.com
