Default transmission questions

We are getting ready to drop a 35k engine into my 97 Caravan. While we have that out, we also need some tranny work.

Do we buy a rebuilt tranny or a low mileage one to put in? What are the pros/cons of either of these methods?

How long does a transmission last? If we buy a rebuilt from the dealership, is he getting one that has been farmed out to any joe blow contractor or are they factory rebuilds?

Any feedback will be considered and helpful.

Thanks.

If I were in your position I would ask them who rebuilds the tranny's and then ask who provides the warranty. As always in dealing with the stealer, you want as much in writing as you can obtain without laying in the service bay to block their business.

I can give you some insight....transmission from MOPAR carry a 3/36 warranty, most aftermarket rebuilds 1/12 warranty. If you have the 4 speed transmission and it has been serviced regulary, it will last a long time. I've seen them go 150,000 miles plus and not have any problems.
