I have a god awful noisy power steering pump, Im going to have to change it.

180k kilometers on it, I thought after searching around that I was going to fix it by replacing the reservoir, but I did, and it only made it worse, and inspecting the old reservoir, there was no plugged screen in the first place. I used power steering fluid though instead of ATF fluid.. After some prolonged driving it does get quiet, after say 1 hour of driving. but when its cold I get funny looks from people on the street. It doesnt affect the steering at all though.


Whats the pump cost? Im quite mechanical but I dont like to spend a ton of time under cars these days. Is it hard to replace?

 

First you should use ATF instead of p/s fluid or you'll get cold weather issues. Second, the noise could be air still in the system. I am assuming you have an '01 or newer van. You need to put a vacuum on the system to remove the air .
