Well I drove it for about another 50 miles today, it's shuddering between gears, and shifts firm some times, but other than that, it drives ok, no slipping or anything like that, so I'm just going to live with it until it quits. Hopefully that won't be for a long time... Thanks to everyone for their help.

 

Well I bit the bullet, took it to the transmission shop, it was burned up, and $1300 later it's completely overhauled and back to shifting like new.

Not quite the low cost happy ending I was hoping for but that's what you get when you don't change your transmission fluid (ever).
