diagnose engine noise, video included
No that sounds like a good idea to test though. It still makes the noise, just 1/10 as loud with the pressure switch disconnected near the dryer. I am making the assumption that this turns off the a/c compressor, I can't hear it click on when I do it.
Guaranteed 100% it is the Litens OAD. It is easy to replace and you can do it without removing the alternator. You will need a special tool to do it.
Go to www.decouplerpulley.com and read more.
Javert.
Note: This shold be a sticky because the Litens OAD is a wearable item and needs to be replaced when worn out. Many people do not know about the Litens OAD and even more people don't know the OAD on its own is available in the Aftermarket.

That is a good place to get it, you can also go to www.iat-usa.com. Even Napa is starting to carry the alternator decoupler, you could try there as well.
As far a checking it, you can remove the front cap, use a 17mm allen key and "feel" the part. With the belt still on (this will hold the pulley), rotate the decoupler shaft. One way it will spin smoothly and freely, in the opposite direction it will have a spring feel to it. This will only check the opperation of the decoupler. It may also have a worn out bearing inside. To check this you must run the engine up to 2500 rpm and then shut it down. The alternator will continue to spin after the engine stops. If you hear a buzz sound at this time, it means the decoupler is worn out and needs replacements.
I do know for sure that the sound that you are hearing is the alternator decoupler. Get one, put it on, and then you will be happy. How about post a video on how to change it and what you find?

Well I took it to the dealer, that didn't go so well. I needed the flash done for the door locks that always stop working so they did the flash and did a free inspection and diagnosis on the belt noise. Turns out I didn't even get what I paid for they diagnosed the tensioner as bad, and the flash didn't work on the doorlocks. Luckily I didn't have them do any additional work.
it was the oad alternator pulley it was frozen. the pulley needs a special tool to replace that costs $80 (and several people have broken) and the pulley is another $60 or so. I found it easier to get a used alternator with 1/3 the mileage (40k miles) for $60 delivered from the Junkyard.
Thanks for your help guys!
