Update. It probably won't change things at all, but I just went out to the van and found that I does still have 1st gear. Thats it, but it will drive in 1st. As soon as it tries to shift into 2nd the revs go up and no engagment through the trans. Once it shifts into 2nd it won't down shift back into 1st until I shut off the ignition and restart engine. Then 1st is available again.

 

planets are probably grenaded. So you definitely must flush the cooler!!! I'd use a can of Lubegard cooler flush. Then blow out with compressed air regulated to under 50 psi. But really, everything I know I learned on the internet via forum boards like this.
