Default 1989 Grand Caravan Se 3.0 Code 54

Wildly conflicting reports as to just what this fault code really stands for. Scanner at a shop says "Camshaft sensor" while the Haynes manual says "no fuel sync pickup signal". Some say these are the same thing. Also, some say this sensor is located in the distributor while others say it is elsewhere. If it is in the distributor, would this be the "Photo-optic sensing unit" that is located in the distributor on my 3.0L engine? (Hall Effect sensors are supposedly only on the engines less than 3.0L). This photo-optic unit is attacted to the underside of the Ignition control module. Is this the so called "camshaft sensor" on this particular model?

Also, would a "camshaft sensor" failure cause the car to go into limp mode?
