Default HELP! is it the head gasket?

I have a 2001 Caravan with the 3.3L
It has been having some hesitation issues that I have been working through with a shade tree mechanic. A large part of the problem is I need a new filler neck. But I have noticed over the last couple days it's been sluggish when starting from a stop.
Today I got on the highway, doing about 120 km/h. It started to sound strange. Then for some reason the ride smoothed out but I could smell really strong burning coolant. The engine didn't overheat, it ran fine all the way home (about 10 km).
When I parked there was a lot of smoke coming up from underneath the fuse relay box. At first I thought it was electrical, but th smoke smelled like burning coolant. There was also some coolant that appeared to be around the bottom of the ignition coil.
There was no white smoke coming from the tailpipe at all while I was driving, and it starts up fine.
Unfortunately I had to leave right away in another car to get to work. Anyone have any idea if that could be the head gasket or is it more likely a blown hose? I haven't noticed that I have been loosing coolant at all lately.
I'm at work right now and freaking out a bit because we have 3 days of driving to a lacrosse tourney starting tomorrow night. Any insight (especially if its common and an easy fix) would be appreciated, I'm freaking out a bit

the number one symptom of a blown head gasket is the massive amount of white steam smoke bellowing out of the exhaust pipe , it could have rotted on the out side also with out it blowing into the cylinder , you need to run it and check it out from underneath to make a determination and make sure your fan turns on

Hmm the fan has been causing me some trouble. Very noisy sometimes when it turns on. Could the A\C compressor have anything to do with it? I replaced the rad last year and the guy at the shop told me that eventually the compressor would go, but that the pulley would seize and I would know that it's gone. I haven't had the a\c running at all.
