Exclamation 98 Grand Caravan ac problem

HI, just bought a used 98 Grand Caravan with air not working. I have the blinking lights and tried the reset which didn't work. So blower works just on high with the two lights blinking . I've search all over for help.

The **** on the ac selector just spins around. I pulled the **** off and the pin it sets on just spins around also. So I have no way of selecting where the air will come out. When I turn the blower on (high only works) it does come out the dash, heat no ac air. (I have recharged the ac also)

I don't see any screws to pull this thing out( if you can) just a little hole that has a tiny spring in it which came out when I ran my finger over. Can I just replace it? Don't know what to call it. HVAC control head??? and go from there?

My main concern right now is having defrost with cooler weather coming, then ac next.

I've looked for this part, but not knowing what it is called or a part number doesn't help.

I've seen the whole panel on ebay for sale saying it has the yellow connecters. ?? I don't know if this has what I need. Since the pin that just spins around is connected to something behind it, I guessing I need to get to what ever is behind it!

Need some help please!!

Thanks Patty

Just to clarify, when you turn the A/C on with the blower on high, it only blows warm air correct?

> Which reset did you try? Which lights are blinking? If you tried the full calibration with an A/C system not working, those lights will blink until the A/C is fixed.

> Did the blower only work on high from the get go or just after you tried the "reset"? If it's the former, the resistor block ($20) is toast.

> You'll need a new HVAC control head, otherwise known as the climate control panel to "fix" the switch.

What to do? If, as I understand it, the A/C is only blowing warm air, you'll have to fix that first. See if the compressor clutch is engaging when you hit the A/C switch. If it's not, it's most likely low on refrigerant. You also need a new climate control panel/HVAC control head. If, the blower only worked on high even before this cropped up, you'll need a new resistor block.

There are other details you may need to know if you are fixing this. Ask away.

Thanks for the reply Cougar41.
To answer your question -"Just to clarify, when you turn the A/C on with the blower on high, it only blows warm air correct?" The a/c button is always on along with the recycle inside air button to the left of it, both blink together all the time. The **** to the right of the selector **** for how hard the air blows only works on high.

Since I got the van, only the blower has worked on high. I had a friend with me when I was looking at it and he said he pulled the **** off on the a/c selector, I'm guessing that is what you call it. It is for where you choose where the air comes out, panel, defrost, floor, etc. He said the pin the **** sits on just spinned around too, just like the ****, but he tried pushing hard on the pin and turning at the same time and he was able to get it to move to floor, panel etc. I have tired to do this but have not been able to duplicate what he did.

"Which reset did you try? Which lights are blinking? If you tried the full calibration with an A/C system not working, those lights will blink until the A/C is fixed" - I did the one where you press the top and bottom buttons on the left side together.

Did the blower only work on high from the get go or just after you tried the "reset"? If it's the former, the resistor block ($20) is toast. It worked on high only, before and after the reset. Would I still need a resistor block? Is that in the black box under the hood, left side where fuses are also? Will it say a/c resistor or blower resistor?

When I hit the a/c button nothing happens it just blinks all the time. I had refrigerant put in and I saw the compressor running when this was being done. I don't think it was running before that.
You'll need a new HVAC control head, otherwise known as the climate control panel to "fix" the switch. Would that be this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123
I don't know if this has everything I need. I have emailed the seller and he is not sure of what I am saying. He just has the part number and says it has yellow connectors. I have found three of these on ebay all for 98 Dodge Grand Caravan, all with the same part number #4677615 but all three have different letter after it, AD A, AC B, and AE A. So you think with this and a new resistor block (a/c resistor???) that may fix this. I have read so much about this problem with the 98. Anything else I should check out for this problem?

If I can get this fixed my next step is to find out why my horn stopped working. Tried replacing the resistor and it didn't fix the problem, but every time the resistor was plugged in the horn would beep once on it's own.

Thanks Patty

Below is what you need and how to remove it. The lights are flashing because at one time they failed the cooldown test. To run the test again, hold down the rear wash and recirc buttons until they all light up. If the a/c is charged, it should pass and stop the lamps from flashing.

RADIO BEZEL AND HVAC CONTROL

REMOVAL
  1. Remove convenience bin - cup holder. Refer to Convenience Bin - Cup Holder Removal and Installation procedure in this section.
  2. Insert the trim stick (special tool #C-4755) between access cover and radio bezel, above convenience bin - cup holder.
  3. Carefully pry the access cover from the instrument panel Convenience Bin Access Cover
  4. Separate the access cover from the vehicle.
  5. Remove convenience bin - cup holder track. Refer to Convenience Bin - Cup Holder Track Removal and Installation procedures in this section.
  6. Remove the attaching screws holding bottom of the bezel to instrument panel Radio Bezel and HVAC Control
  7. Remove the attaching screws holding top of the bezel to the instrument panel.
  8. Remove the bezel from the instrument panel.
  9. Disconnect the wire connector from back of the rear blower switch, if equipped.
  10. Disconnect the wire connector from the back of the HVAC Control.
  11. Remove the bezel.
INSTALLATION
  1. Hold the radio bezel up and connect the wire connector into the back of the HVAC control.
  2. Connect the wire connector into back of the rear blower switch, if equipped.
  3. Place the radio bezel in position on the instrument panel.
  4. Install screws to hold the top of radio bezel to instrument panel.
  5. Install screws to the hold bottom of the radio bezel to the instrument panel.
  6. Install the access cover.

So far I have replace the climate control, blower motor resistor, ac is charged. Checked all relay and fuses for ac, blower motor, etc.

I still have the two flashing lights, ac & recirculate. Did the calibration still have 2 flashing lights. Tried the cool down test, rear window wash and air recirculate. Nothing else lights up when I press these two. Just washer fluid comes out.

Any thing else anyone can think of the get my ac working??

Thanks Patty

did you get a new one or used. Make sure it is the correct one. '96 - early '98 are different than late '98 - 00
