Please help me remove my alternator.
Hi everyone. 06, caravan, 3.8. Sure hope you can help me.
I loosened the two bolts on alternator facing the passenger wheel. I have to loosen the other bolt facing the radiator after putting a closed end wrench on it. But don't see any problems with that.
But after doing that, what is the best way to get alternator out? I don't want to take out dipstick holder because i have read that it is a waste of time.
Can I maneuver it out without moving the EGR valve out. There are two bolts going through this valve into block of engine. I loosened the top one, 10mm.
The bottom one i put an small extension 1/4 inch socket onto my small ratchet because the socket and extension had to be small to slide into the little cave. I tried to loosen it but didn't want to snap something off. Maybe i was just feeling like i put allot of torque on it because of my 1/4'' and small ratchet. The extension wasn't exactly straight because top of alt. raised ext. up a tab.
Can i remove all the bolts and then tilt the alternator forward so I don't have to remove the EGR valve? OR if I do have to remove it, can I tilt it forward and then be able to get a 3/8 ratchet on it to apply more torque?

Step by Step guide on how to do this.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Negative battery cable
Alternator harness connectors
Right front lower splash shield
Accessory drive belt
Lower oil dipstick tube bolt and the wiring harness from the tube
3 mounting bolts
Dipstick tube
Alternator
To install:
Install or connect the following:
Alternator in position and the 3 mounting bolts. Tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
Dipstick tube, lubricate the O–ring with clean engine oil prior to installation, then tighten the upper dipstick tube bolt.
Alternator harness connectors
Lower oil dipstick tube bolt
Accessory drive belt
Right front lower splash shield
Wiring harness to the dipstick tube

Right. I read that info. in the haynes book. Others said through experience that they couldn't get the dipstick off.
I need help with the egr removal as seen in my thread. that bottom bolt on the egr is the difficulty. please see my questions in the thread for help.

I've never had an EGR bolt break off Scott, the problem is you can't get on the bottom bolt square until you remove the altenator bolts and get the altenator out of the way. Then you can remove the EGR valve and the altenator will come right out the top. And correct, don't remove the dipstick tube, if need be, bend it out of your way.
Thanks so much Tizzy for your help. I have been spraying the bolts about 3 different days now. thanks again and again. that helps me with confidence.
I replaced water pump this summer and i was thinking i would brake it too. but i didn't. Thanks God.
thanks tizzy

Tizzy was right on when he said I didn't need the 1/4 extension or wobble socket to remove first that low end bolt that fastens the EGR valve to the block.
The EGR valve needed to be removed in order to get the alternator out.
But the room has such small quarters and many people said use the 1/4 extension attach to 10mm in order to move it first.
Tizzy said just move the 3 bolts holding the alternator and then i won't need too get into that small quarters. I couldn't move the bolt with a small ratchet.
AFter moving the alternator forward i could then move the egr 2 bolts so i could then move the alternator out of the van.
I didn't but the alternator even though the van sounded like a diesel engine that moans. i posted few weeks ago the sound it was making. I bought a over ridding decoupler pulley (OAD) from good year. Dont' get fooled it is the same that GATES and Litens sells. See the cross reference at gates or if not at Litens. The same mancufacture sells them. IN addition the diagram or layout of the decoupler is the same. see it at the goodyear or gates, litens cites. I bought it from a local parts for 48.00. I couldn't buy the tool to remove it for about 65 bucks. I took it to a alt. rebuilder in town and he removed it and replaced the new one i bought for 13.50. i put lithium grease on all bolts before tightening them.
