Default do sliding doors have safely mechanism?

I noticed the sliding doors on my 2011 gc don't seem nearly so sensitive to something in there way as compared to my 2002. Worried some kid's finger will get amputated or an arm crushed, today I tried it on my adult arm with my other hand on the handled in case of an emergency. Well an emergency indeed. I had to use the door handle to stop it crushing my adult sized arm. Why isn't this door detecting something in it's way???

Hmm that is pretty scary, I've noticed it seemed like it took a lot of force to stop it, but never fully tested it. With two little kids it is a bit spooky. Using the door handle to start/stop the power door seems to work inconsistently, so I love the little buttons, but am afraid I might have to disable them to keep the kids off them.
