Default rear door lock help

Hi,
I am a relatively new minivan owner and I need to get up to snuff on the rear door locking and unlocking stuff. (This is for a 96 T&C but I assume all MoPars are alike as far as the door locking mechanism goes).
Recently, in playing around and trying to learn a little about the rear lock, I pushed the rear latch to the lock position with a screwdriver. The hook thing snapped over as if it were grabbing the door jam hardware. I was just wanting to see what it looked like. It looked good..

Once I had enjoyed that, I hit the electronic door unlock button. A nice noise was heard but at the rear door, the latch did not unlock. Then I tried the key and it would not unlatch the thing. At that time I started to get into a mild panic since the door was in the locked position, but not closed, and the two unlock procedures did not correct the situation, And it was starting to get dark.

I definitely do not know how to get the door open from the inside, there is no handle!!! What do you do in an emergency???

I do assume that there is some way to deal with this.
I removed a round plug down at the latch area and felt around with my finger, and did not feel anything that seemed to mean anything, but with a flashlight I did see a part that could be moved up, with a downward movement of the screwdriver handle.
Tried moving that, and it unlocked. (after 20 minutes of messing around)

So, Can someone lay out how this rear door works in adverse situations where some fool locks it (like I did), or if the battery is dead and you do not have a key??

Thanks John
