Tranny/Electrical Issue?
I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan. It has about 280,000 kms and a transmission flush was done in March (don't remember the kms). The correct fluid was used.
The problem I am having is that I can put it in drive, but the tranny will not shift. At the same time the speedometer will not work. After consulting my brother-law who is a mechanic (lives to far away to take it to him), he suggested that I disconnect the battery and let the computer reset. After that was done, it seemed to work fine, but shortly there was a kind of grinding noise, so I pulled over immediately. Started off again and it was fine for another short bit but then the speedometer would drop, and the rpms would go up, like it dropped back into first. If it started off (from going around a corner or from a stop) ok, then would quickly stop working. I have had to drive it, but have kept the rpms to 3500 or less. I know it can't be good for the engine.
Any ideas?? I don't have any money to replace the tranny and am hoping it is something electrical since it seems to be related to the speedometer not working. Is there a fuse that I should check?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Sounds like your tranny is going into Limp mode (2nd gear). If the speedometer works then stops working, it's possible the speed sensor is weak; might replace that first and see if it makes the speedometer work continuously.
More that likely the grinding sound is coming from the rear planet assembly and requires a tear down to repair.

Garage says it is the transmission control assembly module, which is located in front of the driver front wheel. I had a look at it and it is all corroded with a hole in the corner. Apparently a common problem according to the parts dealer. Can't get a used one as there aren't any out there that are any good. Have to shell out nearly $1000 Cdn for this one!
The part was $525 CANADIAN, brand new. The rest was diagnostics, installation and the speedometer had a shorted wire from the issues with the module, then with the crazy taxes we have here on top of it all. Also had to have a loaner vehicle on there as well as there was no way to get to work (1/2 hour drive each way, out in the country with no way to get a ride with anyone or public transit). Had the loaner for 2 days, they had the van for 3 (the first day I limped it there and hitched a ride to work). Very dependable and busy garage. Checked the pricing with parts shops and other garages and came up with very similar quotes. They also do payments (no interest), which is a bonus for me with very little money). I don't think I could have done any better price-wise. My brother-in-law agreed (he works as a mechanic for a Honda dealership). There's no way I could have waited for a part to come in from who knows where with duty, taxes and exchange on top of it.
