Default Keys stolen

Hi folks,

Wife had her purse stolen and ultimately her set of keys to our GC

Dealer quoted me about $200 for both a new set and the programming.

Question is...must I get them from the dealer?

I've seen Pep Boys sells and can program keys/remotes and also see then for sale on eBay. They're obviously much cheaper.

Anyone with any thoughts???

Thanks
A

Do you have 2 keys remaining? If you do, you can add a third, if not, buy a spare off ebay, have your locksmith copy it, and have your dealer add it. Buy and cut a second spare, so now you've got 3, if you lose one, you can buy and program a second easily.

We've only got one spare key, so if I got one off eBay, I'd have to get the dealer to program it, making the car recognize remote commands from 2 different remotes?

Thanks for the input so far fellas.

Ya, if you've only got 1, you need to go to a dealer... get #3 programmed in there, so the next time you lose one, you can add #4 without going back to the dealer. It's been said above that yes, you are taking a risk that if the person that takes your key, uses the remote to locate your van, it's as good as stolen...

As a side note, in Alberta, if the cops find your vehicle with your keys in it, it's considered a authorized use of the vehicle, and insurance won't cover the theft of the vehicle... not sure if that's everywhere or not... but just something to keep in mind.. you need to take it to a dealer to remove a key from the programming afaik..

I guess I'll just buy 2 new ones off eBay.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi,.
Thanks god My Chevy dealer sells the key for about $38 and cuts it on the spot. And I'm sure that many GM dealerships can do the same.
