Dodge CaravanThe Dodge Caravan is the best selling mini van from Dodge. How many Dodge Caravan owners here at DodgeForum.com would agree? Discuss it now!
My wife and I just bought a used Grand Caravan this past weekend and it was doing great up until today. We picked it up on Saturday from a private seller and drove it about 250 miles running various errands this weekend and yesterday. Today, my wife took the kids to school, went to run local errands and when she was driving home, the van stalled out in the neighborhood and wouldn't crank back up. I am guessing my wife still had the van in the 'run' position and tried to crank it while still in drive, since she has never had that happen to her. When I got home today, I checked the engine computer codes by doing the on-off on-off on and came back with code 12, code 21, & code 55. I am guessing code 12 and code 55 are generic codes. The haynes manual says the code 21 is the oxygen sensor. Could this be a bad oxygen sensor or is it a generic code for a vaccuum leak? I have worked on Ford's before and sometimes their codes will emit a faulty oxygen sensor and it is really a vaccuum leak. The engine in the Caravan is a 3.3L V6. How many oxygen sensors are there on the vehicle and which one could be bad?
You bought it used so who knows how long it has been since the O2 sensor has been changed. Code 21 O2sensor signal dosen't change. Probably a bad sensor. The O2 sensor is located in front of the cat, I believe there is only one. Code 12 is battery or computer recently disconnected. Code 55 is end of codes.
I think here's 2 O2's one in front of the cat and one up higher ( should be able to see it from the position you'll be in when looking at the cat location). Don't worry...its a bitch to get to. if it's there.
PS. I know this is a late post and you prob don't need it anymore unless you haven't put the van in the air yet.
Hi Chris, I was wondering if you ever got to the bottom of the code 21 situation with your van? I got a modified 96 Grand Caravan and it just started showing code 21. Stumbling on your message strikes me oddly because of the close similarity of things.(makes me wonder if we have the same paint color too). But I do hope that you were able to resolve this problem not appreciate tear back from you. Thanks
