Default 2000 Grand Caravan starts by itself?

Hi, I have a 2000 Grand Caravan, sport, 3.8L. About 78K miles on it. Was not driven in about a week, but before, had been running fine. Today my wife went to start it, and when she put the key in, she said it made a loud whirring noise, without even turning the key. She took the key out, and the noise went away (but not immediately). I tried to start it later in the day, and I got nothing, no power at all. So I figured the battery was drained, and when I tried jumping it, as soon as the battery was connected, the engine began trying to turn over (no key in ignition). Disconnected cables. Tried again, and same thing happened. Next time, after I connected the cables, I turned the key over, and engine seemed to start, but a loud whistling type noise was coming from the engine, so I turned it off and disconnected the jumper. Any idea what might be causing this? Seemed to be no warning of this problem. We had decent amount of rain the past day or 2, if there is some relation. Could this be a starter or electrical issue? The engine coming to life with no key seems to be a bit strange. Anybody heard of this before? Thanks for your reply.

That's freaky. I would pull the battery out the remote to make sure it isn't sending a signal all the time.
If not then open the steering column and see if the ignition cylinder is dirty?
