Default 2006 Caravan heater problem

I admit I'm new to this site, and I've spent some time going thru the forum trying to find a similar problem to mine. Perhaps I am overlooking an answer that already exists. I have a 2006 Caravan (not GC), and have replaced and calibrated the heat/ac control. The radiator coolant is at the proper level, and the heater hoses are hot at the firewall; but, it still heats intermittently. I can hear the change as I switch from heat (floor) to defrost (windshield) and in between settings. Can someone advise what to check for next? Thanks!! Note: I do not have rear heat/ac, and the control is not automatic.

Is the temp gauge consistent and not slowly moving up and down? You may have to take a closer look at the actuators on the HVAC unit. They may be drifting.

The temp gauge has been operating normally. Out of curiosity, I took the radiator cap off rather than rely on a visual at the plastic reservoir. I added almost one gallon of coolant (I didn't realize it was that low) to the radiator, and the rest to the reservoir. After that I began to have heat. Apparently it had just enough coolant to make the hoses hot, but not enough to supply heat inside the vehicle. I don't believe I'm losing coolant into the oil because there is nothing unusual about the oil or the oil level. Perhaps it losing it from the heater core, as my wife told me the front carpet on the passenger side stays wet or damp. I'll have to wait til warmer weather to check that, as I don't have a garage to put the vehicle in. Cougar41, I appreciate your response, and I will go ahead and keep an eye on the gauge.
