I have done that.
The reverse lights no longer work and I now have a battery drain.

Maybe one thing will lead to another. Backup lights power runs from the run position of the ignition switch to pin #3 (white wire) of the park/neutral switch. You could check for 12vdc there or jumper pins #1 and 3 at the connector to bypass the PN switch.
