Van won't start
 

Ok, so I have a '96 Grand Caravan and sometimes when I go to start it it will die after a few seconds, the hazards won't stop flashing, the alarm set light flashes, and sometimes the instrument panel will complete go off. I have no clue what it could be but it hasnt started in a few days and I need help. Thanks

There's a very precise procedure developed over the years. Decades of trial and error and in depth analysis have concluded it works. It can only be attempted by those with the training and skills required for such a demanding act. Smack the dash above the instrument cluster and see if anything changes.

Your symptoms indicate the solder joints securing the connector to the instrument cluster circuit board may be cracked. Unfortunately, this is a very common 3rd generation (96-00) problem talked about many times on this and other forums. The "dash smack" can be a temporary fix. Here's the permanent fix:

Crazy that a problem like this would stop a vehicle from running.

It's all to do with the CCD data bus that runs all over the van including the cluster and the PCM that controls the engine. It gets damaged anywhere and effects are seen in seemingly unrelated areas.

Yes but that's at the bottom of your list right now. A BCM can be big bucks. This solder joint reflow is free.

What is another name for a bcm? There is a junkyard in my area that allows you to come in and pull your own part for cheap prices. They didn't have bcm on the parts list.

I've only heard it called the BCM or body control module. If you want to go that route, fair warning. Make dam sure the BCM you get comes out of a van with the same security system configuration as your van meaning OEM VTSS system or no security system. Installing a mismatched BCM can mean reprogramming or replacing the PCM. More bucks.

They only have electronic control module on the list, so I take it that isnt the same thing.

Err. I hate splitting hairs. Why can't the just call it what it is? ECU is a generic term that can be used to describe practically any box that has a microprocessor in it. It can be the BCM, the PCM, the airbag controller, and on and on. Just compare the part numbers to identify it.
