Default 2005 SXT Heater Core

Hi, I have to replace a heater core in my 2005 GC SXT. I followed the instructions and I found that the steering intermediate shaft is in the way. All the repair manuals say to just push the accelerator pedal up and the beak pedal down and pull out the heater core. Problem is, the heater core only come out half way and then hits the intermediate shaft/U-joint. Does anyone know why I am having this issue?

I was wondering how your repair went after I found your post. Did you have to disconnect the lower intermediate shaft joint to remove that core? I am considering this repair and would appreciate your input!
