I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan Sport 3.3L FFV.

I have no power at the cooling fan relay pin 1. I have tested the ground pin and do have a ground. I have also pulled the relay in the engine compartment fuse box and do have power at the innermost terminal closest to the engine.

I have not completely unwrapped the wire going from the fuse panel down to the relay connector, but from the sections I have checked, all wires seem in tact with no obvious abrasions, melting, or anything else unusual.

I have also confirmed the fuse is good and even tried a replacement just to rule it out.

Am I correct to presume that with the key on, I should have power at pin 1 of that relay connector? If so, what could cause a no power situation there, aside from a broken wire, assuming that my ground tests ok at the connector?

Yes you should see 12vdc at pin 1 (orange/red wire) with your keys in your pocket. Power comes from pin 9 connector C2 of the IPM. I would bet that's where the problem is especially since the relay connector is not melted or damaged. There is a history of bad corrosion problems on the IPM connectors and internally on the circuit board. Getting power on both sides of the fuse (40 amp #27)? I don't see a relay in the circuit besides the rad fan "relay".

 

Thanks for the reply. With ignition off (keys in pocket), I have only 4.x volts on the red/orange wire at the fan relay connector. I do have 12 volts at the fuse.

What would be the likely culprit of this voltage drop?

 

Either a corroded pin 9 on connector C2 on the bottom of the IPM or something inside the IPM. You'll have to remove it and disassemble it to inspect inside. First check for continuity and shorts to ground on that orange/red wire.

Just for grins you could pull the fuse and reinstall it several times to make sure any corrosion that may be in the fuse contacts in the panel (IPM) are cleaned off, then check the voltage again.
