[4th Gen : 01-07]: wiring diagram needed please for 2002 and 2004 ambient air temperature sensor
Would anybody be so kind as to upload relevant wiring diagrams for 2002 caravan and 2004 and 2005 caravan ambient temperature sensor and overhead console? I recently added an overhead console to my 2004 caravan that did not come with one. The console was pulled from a 2005 and the temperature was correct when connected. I was unsatisfied with the console because it did not display instant MPGs. I went and pulled another identical looking console from a 2002 from the salvage yard and was all happy about getting instant MPGs, but I just realized last night that the temperature display shows -40 degrees. Frustrated, I went back to the salvage yard this afternoon and pulled two other consoles, these also came from 2002 caravans (or town + country I think) and tried them in the parking lot. they both show -40 degrees. I tried the 2005 console and it shows the correct temperature. All else being equal, I would just use the 2005 but I really want the instant mpgs as shown on the 2002 version. Would anybody know what might be different in the wiring? Rockauto.com shows identical part numbers for 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 ambient temperature sensors, so they all have the same sensor. My 2004 BCM obviously puts out the temperature info as long as the 05 console displays it. Three salvage yard pulls can't be wrong. The connections at the console from a 2005 and 2002 show identical wire colors in identical spots, so I'm at a loss. I would love to somehow wire it up directly. Scouring the internet, I came across a pdf which explains that a temperature display of -40 is diagnostic of an "open" in the circuit for the temperature, whereas 150 degrees (or something like that) would be diagnostic of a short in that circuit. I can't have either of those since temperature displays correctly with the 2005 console. Does anyone have any ideas? I hope it is not a BCM difference between the years......I hope the difference between 2002 and 2005 will be apparent in the respective diagrams. Thanks in advance.

I was hoping I might be able to decipher from those wiring diagrams what goes where, but I am not sure if what I want to see is even on those....can someone possibly tell me what color wires are from the ambient temperature sensor that connect to the overhead console, namely, what wires come from the bcm connector at the base of the passenger b pillar that feed the temperature signal to the overhead console?
If you read the 2004 diagram wiring the colors listed are :
VT/LG " Violet with Light Green"
DB/DG " Dark Blue with Dark Green"
VT/LG " Violet with Light Green"

I see from the 2 diagrams that the 02 ambient wiring does not continue to the PCM and it does on the 04,05 model ambient wiring. That could be the reason you can not get a temp reading with the 02 console and do get temp readings with the newer ones.Looks like its incompatible.
yes I saw the colors, but am not electronically competent enough to know how the information from the wiring is used. I thought I would be able to find a path straight through...For example, in the 2002 diagram, the front control module in the integrated power module gets the ambient temp from the sensor, from there, I can't see how that information would be transferred to the BCM and/or overhead console. A pinout of that connector at the base of the passenger B pillar is what is needed now, from the 02 and the 04. The 02 model must have a way of relaying the info to the overhead console, since it is a function of the three 2002 overhead consoles that I pulled. I am wondering if each of the three 2002 models that I pulled the consoles from were actually Town and Country models, and thus had different wiring. I really don't think so, but again, everything was covered in snow all around them at the salvage yard. Thanks for your help. I'll keep dredging for now.
Well, apparently 01, 02 and 03 overhead consoles will not give a temperature reading if installed in an 04 and up model caravan. A search this morning for consoles on www.car-part.com for an 04 model only shows listings from 04 through 07. A search for an 02 caravan overhead console on the same site will only show listings for 01, 02 and 03 models. I spoke with a salvage yard guy on the phone and asked about it. He seemed very knowledgeable, and he told me that just recently (unknown how recent) they updated the search engine on www.car-part.com for the consoles to reflect the compatibility for the consoles between the years. I can only surmise that even though the wiring harness for the console of 02 and 05 are identical in wire color and number, the 01 02 and 03 consoles probably respond to a different signal type from the BCM for the ambient temperature display. Weird. Went back to the salvage yard and got back the 05 console, temp display functioning again, but lost the instant mpg as it is not a feature of the console. I don't care anymore, that instant MPG readout was all over the place anyway and not any kind of relevant info could be used with it. (sour grapes perhaps (Aesop's fables)) There is a question, though of if the dot-matrix display EVIC model consoles will give instant MPG. Someone on another forum showed pictures of his upgrade, but his problem is that you have to have TPMS installed otherwise you're looking at a display telling you to inflate your tires all the time. Can't have everything I guess. Thank you all, I hope this info can help someone make an informed decision someday if they want to install a console.
