[5th Gen : 08+]: Antifreeze smell
Hi everyone,
I searched for my problem but didn't find a good match. I have a 2010 SXT. When it gets normal op. Temp. I smell antifreeze. Doesn't matter if heat is on, air is on or nothing on. I have hunted and can't find any type of leak. There is no smoke or smell from tailpipe. I am assuming I have a very small leak someplace that I can't find.
My plan is to use some Bars stop leak. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
John

Hot coolant is always flowing through the heater core under the dash. Have you checked the foot wells for damp carpets? Not unheard of for a 5 year old heater core to leak. Is coolant level going down in the bottle?
Look just above the crossover pipe, there is a plastic wye in the heater hose, chances are it is cracked. It is a VERY common problem with a simple DIY fix or an expensive dealer fix if you choose.

Thank you for the replies. I have checked the carpets, my first thought was heater core, but everything is dry. The only time you can't smell it is when the AC is on. You can smell it when the blower is off with no vent all. That is why I am thinking it is a small leak.
I will check the Y connector when I get home tonight. Is the fix as simple as going to the parts store and replacing it? Or is it dealer only?
Again thank you for the replies,
John

Hi,
At lunch I went out and looked and felt around the "Y" split and the underneath side was wet. So I am going to say this weekend I will replace the plastic one with a brass fitting from the hardware store.
Thank you for your help.

do not ever put those leak stuff in the rad, u asking for more trouble than they worth.
Try to get a plastic Y and same size, some have said that the metal can cause issues with it being affected rusting or something in that nature and affecting cooling system, think online ebay sells the aluminum ones but think bit costly.

The plastic wye will crack over and over. The plastic part was installed too close to the block and gets too hot. If you are going to replace the cracked plastic wye with another plastic wye then you should 8"to12" hose coming off the block to pull the wye away from the high heat area, you will need to shorten the other hoses. I would suggest that you replace the plastic wye with an aluminum wye. you can find one here http://www.ebay.com/itm/METAL-Y-KIT-Heater-hose-repair-Chrysler-Town-Country-Dodge-Caravan-coolant-leak-/291603333715?hash=item43e4e9c253This is the part that should have been installed from the factory. Hope this helps
