Default heat/defrost smell problem

When we run the heater (maybe defroster also, not sure about that), we get a smell that seems somewhat like maple syrup. Sounds strange, but does anyone here know what might be the cause of that?

That is most likely coolant you are smelling. A leaky heater core is the most common cause.
