Question Power Steering Is Stiff -- Troubleshoot Steps?

Vehicle: 2002 Dodge Caravan SE (3.3L, V6)

For some time now the vehicle has experienced power steering issues. It is quite rare. What happens is on cold start or when it rains or while driving the steering wheel can suddenly become very stiff to turn. Sometimes we let the car warm up for a few extra seconds then all is fine but this last time while driving we had to park the car and wait for several minutes before power steering returned. Typically there is a loud squeal that occurs when the power steering becomes ok (this only happens during a cold start though).

I've been told it could be the power steering fluid reservoir needs to be completely replaced. I've also been told it could be the rack & pinion steering?

What tests can i perform to conclusively identify the cause of my power steering issue?

Thanks.

Check the belt. Sounds as though the belt is slipping. The loud squealing is indicative of a loose/worn accessory drive belt.

I will do that. Does the belt have anything to do with Power Steering though? Though your point makes sense for the squeal I'm thinking it is a separate issue.

Yes, the belt drives the power steering pump, so if the belt is slipping, the power steering pump isn't working.

Absolutely. Power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor all driven off the serpentine belt. If you ever intend on doing your own repairs or figuring things out on your own, I strongly encourage you to purchase a Haynes manual for your vehicle. It's a good start on learning about it. Also makes it less likely you will be taken or ripped off by a repair facility. Those places pray on lack of knowledge. But, we are here to help you!

Great stuff guys. I have a copy of the Service Manual. I will inspect it for the belt. I do recall having the serpentine belt replaced last year though, possibly 2 years go.
