Default A/C compressor clutch friction surface on pulley

In the process of replacing the AC compressor clutch on my 2003 Caravan Sport (3.3 L engine). Picked up a known-good used compressor complete with clutch from a lower-mileage van, but I only plan on using the clutch assembly from it. Upon taking the clutch assembly apart in order to remove it from the compressor, I notice that the 'friction surface' on the pulley has a ring of brake-pad-like material on it ....I assume to provide sufficient friction to allow the pulley to turn the pump when the A/C is turned on. I see that this material is worn down to the point that it is level with the metal surface around it. In checking out a video on the forum (
) I see that some AC clutches just depend on metal-on-metal friction, rather than having this friction material on the pulley side. SO ....all that to ask the question: does it really matter if the friction material is worn down even with the metal around it? Will the clutch still drive the pump as it should?
