Default Up date modules (pcm, tipm and hvac out of date)

Just bought a 2008 GC SE, and took it to the dealer for an "incomplete" factory recall having to do with the key fob and ignition module. They told me (along with a laundry list of "recommendations") that I need the above titled module update done by them, for a cost of around $190. Does anyone know what these updates consist of, and why they would cost so much, especially if they are essentially compute updates? This strikes me as if it was Microsoft charging me each time they update their OS.

Hi jdocop,

Software updates on vehicle components can be for a number of reasons but generally they offer some sort of performance improvement. Once your vehicle is outside of its Basic Limited Warranty your dealership does have the ability to charge for updates. Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Yes, Andrea, I do have additional questions! Just because they have the "ability" (your word) does not mean they are obligated to charge a fee for this service! Isn't there some alternative for us older people, on fixed incomes? No way to obtain this service for a bit less money?

Hi jdocop,

Our dealerships are independently owned and operated so you would need to work with your local dealer for further assistance regarding your request for cost assistance.

Are you having any problems with your van? If not I would pass on the module updates.
