Default Leaking Fuel Tank at the Pump/Lock Ring

How in the world do you get the tank to stop leaking at the pump/lock ring area on the tank?! I replaced the pump (and filter) on Saturday, My wife put gas in yesterday and it was leaking like crazy, I took it back apart last night and made sure that the gasket was seated appropriately and that all of the tabs were engaged on the lock ring and then I added a little more gas ... and more leaking!!

Are you sure it's not leaking because of rust in the same area as where the pump and seal are seated? Are the retaining tabs on the tank damaged or bent?

If not, did you re-use the original lock ring and seal? Most pumps will usually come with a new seal, but if yours didn't, get a new seal. I'd also recommend a new lock ring if yours is significantly rusty if for no other reason than installing a new ring is much easier.

Also, make sure to clean the seal area very thoroughly. If there's significant corrosion, use some spray lube (WD40, PB blaster, etc) and a non-metal brush (a hard bristle toothbrush works well) to clean the seal area on the tank. Wipe as much off as possible, then use brake or carb cleaner on a clean rag to wipe down the seal surface on both the tank and the pump.

Finally, use a light coating of engine oil on the seal to help it seat properly while installing the lock ring.

It did come with a gasket and I used the new one. Although the original gasket seemed to be of higher quality. The retaining clips did seem a little bent and the lock ring was definitely really bent. I tried to straighten everything out and I did make sure that everything was snug and that the ring was snugly under the clips. I may need to just try a new lock ring. It's a mopar only part so I'll have to see if a dealership around here has one or I'll have to buy it online and wait for it to be shipped.

If the lock ring was bent then that’s most likely why it won’t seal, even though you tried to straighten it.

I don’t know what parts stores are in your area but if you have an Arnold Motor Supply, check with them. They’re our supplier at work and often times they’re able to find parts like this. Their website doesn’t have a search for the general public but they do have a store locator.

Ok fixed that leak but when I took it back apart I broke the orange/yellow fuel line retainer clip so the line from the fuel filter is not snapping back into place, any idea what size clip this is?

I don’t know for sure, but the most common fuel supply line size is 3/8” - I would think dorman would have some kind of variety pack that has a few different sizes in it.
