Default battery light came on while driving.

hey y’all battery light came on while i was 20 minutes from work i made it there and back home that day (45 minute drive) went on youtube and watched a few videos. check terminals for corrosion/bad wires/bad cables, all fine. did the battery test while van was running 11.89 V so i trickle charged it overnight but it failed to charge so i got a $50 battery at walmart. did battery test again 12.1 V while van running. bought a Haynes repair manual as well. also there was a slight squealing when i start the van but it reduces to a suddle whistle when i drive it. (i was thinking the squealing is bc i leave for work at 430am and it’s cold here recently) did the alternator test with my multimeter and numbers were crazy high and while doing it the van cut off. wouldn’t start. that’s when i got the new battery. checked the wires on alternator and all seemed fine so i go under the car and the wire going from the alternator to the starter i believe it’s a green/gray wire, there’s a plastic cover over where the wire bolts on is melted. now would this have anything to do with the battery light coming on? i want to know before i remove all the wires in the wire harness and mess with that. thanks y’all!!!
