[5th Gen : 08+]: Radio, camera upgrades and computer programmer
Hello, new to the forum, but not to Grand Caravans. My now gone '02 had 300k when I finally sold it off (and it still ran fine. I did almost all maintenance, upgrades and repairs on it myself.)
I have a 2016 with the sirius cd radio, and I want to go to a full screen type radio, whether that is the stock RBZ or an aftermarket is up for discussion and persuasion. Open to all input on that decision.
I've seen the ebay pages and the Infotainment pages on getting plug and play radios from them, but it seems to me that they are all over priced...
Here's what I want, and I'm open to all suggestions, tips and comments. Also, I'm an avid DIYer so I'm not worried about any ASPECT of the changes, just best functionality and less cost as possible.
So, I'm going to install a 360* camera system on the van. I don't currently have a screen radio, so I want to upgrade the radio so this can be in-dash and not on an external monitor. My goto would be the RBZ, but also looking at Android heads or Pioneer or one of those others. I also would like to have bluetooth for phone calls, but with the factory system thats more parts whereas it is built-in in the aftermarket ones. I also would like to have access to the camera system on demand, vs reverse only, for slow forward parking and so forth, so that looks like an additional jail break on the factory units, which is more money. I do not have the dvd entertainment system, and I doubt I would add it (as the kids have tablets and are gapped enough that they don't watch the same movies anyway).
So thru OBDgenie I can get a "program" that I would use once for $200 to tell my computer to turn on the factory control reverse camera... That seems awful steep.
I have a Ford truck, and there is a program called ForScan that uses ELM327 OBD controllers to control and program almost anything on those trucks, and it's free... Does Dodge have such a tool that DIYers use? I found another program that was $50 that would control the computer and turn it on, but it was $50, which is better than $200, but I want to know if there's a free or cheaper option to control the computer functions for all these options.
The 360* camera system I bought (oh and I don't have a factory backup camera now or we wouldn't be having this conversation), will connect to any other radio or screen with RCA or HDMI inputs as well. So, I keep coming back to factory radios or aftermarkets, and price will be the deciding factor. Stock $200 ebay radio plus cost of activation from dealer $???, or infotainment $600 plus bluetooth add on $400, plus jailbreak to run screen on demand $300, $1300... Aftermarket deck $100-$300, plus frame to mount, and wiring harnesses, plus ???
Ready for all tips, suggestions, info and hacks to make this work.
