Default No Crank, No Start, Full Power

2006 128,000 miles

I've had the same problem for two days in a row and I just don't know these vans well enough to diagnose it.

I went to leave yesterday morning and turned the key and it wouldn't start. Full power to all lights, dash, and radio. I assumed it was the battery so I jumped with no change. I tried turning the key a few more times and it finally started. I drove around the rest of the day making quite a few stops and had no problem starting. I guessed it was just a dirty contact somewhere because I've had problems with that since I bought it a few months ago.

This morning I had a the same thing happen. I followed the same procedure as last time. Tried jumping it, rapidly turned the key to start, banged on the steering column while yelling profanities. No change. I tried the reset trick by connecting the positive and negative leads together while off the battery. Odometer displayed "DONE" when I tried again. I also tried swapping out the relays in the fuse box to see if maybe it was one of them.

The thing I noticed today that I may have missed yesterday was that when I turn the key to the start position, I can hear a thump in the steering column. It's a very solid noise, like the steering wheel lock engaging or disengaging. I'm not sure if that's what the noise actually is.

Edit: The security light is not staying on, so I don't think it's that.

I have a new 2018 with 10,000 miles (since Dec), I drove to the ballpark for my kids practice, parked 5 min, tried to start and then touched the brake pedal and it stopped cranking. Turned the key again and nothing, took off the battery terminals and put them back on and tried no difference.

Finally had it towed to the dealer and they found a wire between the starter and starter solenoid "fell off". It's unlikely to be this but you should check the wires at the starter. Then if you can, next time it wont start. put a multimeter on the power at the starter and see if power is getting to the starter when the key is being put to the start position. If power but no crank then it's a bad starter. If no power then you have to figure out why. I don't have time at the moment to go on from here. But if you try it and no power at starter then come back and I will advise further.

I'm going to go at it when I get off of work tonight. Yesterday when I got it started I made another 5 stops where I had to start it again and didn't have any problems. That's what made me think it was just a dirty contact somewhere because I've had problems with other electrical parts. I guess it was sitting and not used much by the guy I bought it from.
